Club History

The Pelham Soccer Club has been in existence since 1979. In 2004 the Pelham Soccer Club became Incorporated (Board of Directors), allowing us to a apply for grants. Over the years the club has grown to its current level of 728 registrants. We are always striving to increase that number.

We provide soccer to everyone aged 3 years and older. Games are played 6 days per week at Harold Black Park, Centennial Park, Pelham Arena fields and Glynn A Green.

The club does not have a base of operations though our Board meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at the Lions Club on Regional Road 20 (formerly Hwy. 20) in Fonthill. Meetings begin at 7:30 pm.

Thank you to our 2008 Sponsors.

League Information
Peanut, Timbit, Pre-Squirt, & Squirt House League House League

The Peanut League is organized for all players aged 3 & 4. The Timbit league is organized for all players aged 5 & 6. The Pre-Squirt league is for girls and boys aged 7 & 8, while the Squirt league players are aged 9 & 10. All divisions play on Saturday mornings. The Timbits play at Glynn A. Green, Peanuts play at Harold Black Park and both Pre-Squirts and Squirts play at the Pelham Arena. For those who do not wish to play for the travelling teams or those who do not make it onto a travelling team, the club offers a co-ed Interlock house league. Co-ed teams compete against other Pelham teams as well as teams from Merritton and Thorold. The co-ed age groups offered are 11-12 year olds and 13-14 year olds. This league has proved to be a very successful endeavour.

Please note: The club is in need of a convenor in order for this program to continue.
TravelSpecial Olympics Soccer Team
Beginning at age 9, the club offers "Travelling Recreational" soccer. These teams play in the Niagara Youth Soccer League (NYSL) for boys and the Niagara Regional Girls Soccer League (NRGSL) for girls. The teams play league games in centres within Niagara. These teams also compete in tournaments within and outside the region.

Try-outs are held for boys and girls travel teams in all age groups. These tryouts are announced in January and are held in gyms beginning the middle of February. 2009 will be the first year where try-outs are held for older players. The Club usually has one team per age group in the travelling leagues unless registrations allow us to field more than one team in any age group.
The Pelham Soccer Club will again offer the Special Olympics soccer program for 2009. Our hope is to have enough players to make two teams with athletes ages 4 – 8 years on one team and athletes ages 9 – 14 years on another team. Players with can choose to play on an integrated soccer team with their age appropriate peers or on the Special Olympics team(s).

The Special Olympics soccer program will promote basic soccer skills, safe team play, good sportsmanship and self-esteem building. Along with the coach, this team will have the added assistance of peer coaches. The peer coaches will provide the players one-to-one attention, assist them in learning the basic game of soccer, and promote teamwork and having fun! This program will run concurrent with all other Pelham Soccer programs.

Pelham Soccer Club PlayersAlso on hand for the photo were Pelham Mayor Ron Leavens, and Fred Steeve, Niagara Grant Review Team member from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Several players from the club were also on hand to conduct a brief clinic for the adults.

Pelham Soccer Club has been providing an opportunity for the youth of Pelham to learn and enjoy theGroup Shot with Mayor Leavens (Far right) game of soccer since 1979. Registration is currently 850 players ranging in age from 3 to 18 years. There are roughly 60 volunteer coaches and a board of 16. Despite being a small club with a small player pool from which to draw, the club has fielded highly competitive travelling teams, and an extensive house league program for players under the age of 14. The club also trains and develops its own referees, and conducts complimentary National Coaching Certification Program clinics for all of its coaches every year.

The club is one of 450 community groups across Ontario who received funding. In total OTF awarded more than $31 million this quarter. The OTF, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives $100 million annually from Ontario’s charity casino initiative. The Foundation allocates grants to eligible charitable and non-for-profit organizations in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors. Soccer Referees Niagara

The Pelham Soccer Club recommends that all of their referees join the Soccer Referees Niagara association. Further information can be obtained at the Soccer Referees Niagara website.

Coaching Positions

Interested in being a coach? All coaches should have some knowledge about soccer however we will teach the necessary basics. There are no requirements for Timbit, Pre-Squirt and Squirt coaches but we do strongly recommend that coaches attend the coaching clinics offered by the club. All coaches need to provide a police check. Level 1 Certification is needed for the Travelling Recreational Leagues (NYSL or NRGSL) to coach children in the age groups U9 - U12. Level 2 Certification is required to coach U13 to U16 and Level three is required to coach U17 to Senior. Those who wish to coach in a higher league (SRSL, OYSL...) also need a minimum of Level 3 certification.
